Colin – Blasted Memories

And our newest member of the gang is Colin from Blasted Memories.  Colin creates bespoke gifts and pieces of art work using the technique of sand blasting.

Colin has been sand blasting for just over 2 years now; he was a tiler and wanted to extend his creative side a little more.  So he started to search the internet to see what other things he could do to develop his tiling.  He found sand blasting!

Ironically Colin doesn’t use this in tiling anymore; instead he has managed to get hooked on this fabulous and unique craft and now has his workspace in our studio at Barleylands

Lots of people are unsure of what sand blasting actually is; it is a technique of using compressed ai and a type of grit (this is often referred to as “media”).  The media is fired onto the surface and erodes it in the places needed.  Similar to sand on beach pebbles.  Colin uses a small gun-like instrument to direct the media into the right places and this enables him to create intricate pictures as well as lovely personalised gifts.

Colin has created an exciting range of Christmas gifts too.  Such as these lovely tree ornaments and tea light holders.  There are a selection of these in the Studio to choose from, but if you have a specific design that you’d like on there Colin can help you with that too.

You could have your babies name added to this lovely tree decoration to celebrate their first christmas too!

These are just a few items to show you; but if you want to see more of Colin’s work, such as his bespoke cheeseboards or coaster sets check out his Folksy shop or pop into the Studio.

Dave – The Clock Man

As you know there are 4 of us in Studio 23 and I’m going to give you a little introduction into all of us one by one!  Aren’t you lucky…..?

Today I’m introducing you to the fabulous Mr David Longley AKA The Clock Man!  Dave is a clock repairer….or if you are being really posh he’s a horologist.

Dave was a car mechanic all his working life, but has always tinkered with clocks as a hobby.  He blames his Dad…..when he was younger if something didn’t work his Dad would just have to take it apart and figure out why!  Dave has clearly picked up on this trait too.

He got very excited when this clock came in for repair last month.  This is the inside of a German antique clock, about 1930’s.  And this is very rare inards, of stunning quality too!

And so when he retired he began repairing clocks; he’d been doing it as a hobby for about 20 years and had taken over the spare room.  However, Dave’s wife doesn’t like the sound of ticking clocks!  They do say opposite’s attract 🙂 and thus he began working from Barleylands about 5 years ago!

And since then…..he hasn’t stopped!!!  Dave repairs any type of clock from cuckoo to grandfather; pendulum to mantle clocks.  So if you have a clock that needs a service or repair please pop in and see us.  Alternatively if you have a Grandfather clock Dave can do a home visit for you too.

Dave also has clocks in the studio for sale too.  He has a stunning collection of antique clocks, pocket watches & watches for sale.

Dave is in our studio every Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday.  The other days he’s out doing home visit’s.  You can see his facebook page here for more information: https://www.facebook.com/BarleylandsClockMan

You’ll have more posts about Dave & his clocks very soon.

Thanks

Today is the day :-)

Well as you may know it’s the 1st October and that means that today is the day that I “get the keys” to Studio 23.

I’m going to explain a bit more for you, as this may seem a bit confusing.

Up until now Studio 23 has been called All About Time and the residents in there have been Dave – The Clock Man, Anne – Oakleaf Jewellery, me – Katie Vale Designs and a selection of antique dealers having their items on display in there.

As of today the antiques are leaving…..and Colin – Blasted Memories is joining us!  We are all super excited about this!

Next week we will be closed for a few days so that we can fully decorate and refurb the shop.  And most importantly we are getting a new shop sign too!

So there you have it…..a little more information on how this has all come about!

Please bear with us whilst we go through these cosmetic changes…..but just to make you aware that we still offer these great services & arts every day!
